Police Officer

Lateral Entry / Academy Graduate - University of California Police Officers deliver police services to the University and local community. Officers patrol on foot, bicycle and in vehicles; respond to crimes; investigate complaints; arrest offenders; appear in court; respond to medical, fires and other emergencies; control traffic; provide law enforcement and security at major events or assemblies; engage in crime prevention; participate in community liaison meetings; safeguard the custody and disposal of found property and evidence. Officers deliver police services to the local community in participation with the Isla Vista Foot Patrol and mutual aid to other Police Departments.

 

Salary and Benefits

Salary : $5,049 to $6,106 monthly. Experienced police officers will be considered for appointment at a salary above entry level. Persons who possess an Intermediate POST Certificate are eligible for an additional $175 a month and persons who possess an Advanced POST Certificate are eligible for an additional $275 a month.

 

Retirement: 3% @ 50 and a variety of voluntary pre and post tax investment plans.

Health Insurance: The University contributes to the cost of dental, vision, and a selection of health plans.

Uniform Allowance: An annual allowance of $725 is paid after one year of service.
Holidays: 13 holidays per year.
Vacation:
  • 15 days a year for 1-10 years service.
  • 18 days a year for 10-15 years service.
  • 21 days a year for 15-20 years service.
  • 24 days a year for 20+ years service.
  • Sick Leave: 12 days sick leave per year.

    Minimum Qualifications

    U.S. Citizenship.

    21 years of age or older.

    Equivalent to high school diploma. College degree preferable.

    Weight proportionate to height.

    Vision no less than 20/100, correctable to at least 20/30 in both eyes. Functional color vision.

    Free from disability obstructive to job performance.

    No felony convictions (pursuant to Government Code Section 1029).

    Possession of valid Class-C California Driver's License with a safe driving record as evidenced by a DMV report.

    Successful completion of oral interviews, extensive background investigation, medical and psychological examinations.

    Ability and willingness to work in a university environment rich in diversity containing a wide variety of ethnicities, cultures, nationalities, religions, sexual orientations, etc.

    Ability and willingness to work in an environment, which demands high police officer integrity, accountability and involvement in the community as a problem solving resource.

    Preferred Qualifications

    • Employed as a peace officer by a law enforcement agency as defined in Penal Code sections 830.1 or 830.2 (subsections a-c) within three years of application.

    • Graduation from or current enrollment in a California POST approved police academy or employment as a peace officer by a California law enforcement agency.
